Define Human...
In Black Sovereignty there are essentially two races; Humans and Kurori. The Kurori are simply beings that are roughly like humans who can use magic to do whatever their hearts desire; humans are not so simple. The Human race proceeds to branch into two categories; Human and Cursed Human. Then the Cursed Human has two types; Kaito and New Human. This guide will very briefly touch upon the normal humans of Black Sovereignty, then focusing on the cursed humans.
Humans, what about them?
The Humans of Black Sovereignty are pretty much the same thing as Real Life Humans, with the sole difference being the world they're surrounded by. At this point in time there is no such thing as a Teenager, you're either a child or an adult. Because of the lack of a teenage concept, humans are expected around the age of 13 to be earning their own keep in the world. And because of that, the teens of the world are quite self-sufficient and have very practical skill sets.
One quick thing to note is that the year is 1903, the end of the victorian era. The only thing we don't have in common with the real-life 1903, is that we have magic and modern technology. Speaking of magic...
Humans always thought magic was myth until recently, what with the war with the Kurori and all. Sure there was always that myth that Erebus was inhabited by horrible spirits or demons. Everyone knew people lived there and it was just always assumed that it was a large wealthy family that bought the land. Imagine their surprise when a couple of kids infiltrated the place and came back with their tales of wonder and the magic they saw. The defining action which made an angry Kurori Emperor declare war on the humans. After which a kind Kurori by the name of Melophane decided to save the humans from their absolute massacre, but that was only after a considerable amount of damage had been done. This brings us to present and to the cursed humans.
Before we move on though. Remember that no matter if you're playing a human or cursed human, your character has very likely only just discovered magic. They might be intensely frightened by the thought that demons and magic exist, others could go insane by it. They could be very curious and wish to learn more. Many wish for revenge after being attacked by the powerful Kurori, others believe it's hopeless and that they should just submit to them. It's all something to keep in mind when you create a human, remember... they always have strong motivations.
Kaito[/size]
The most popular race on the site and the first of the varieties of cursed humans. Usually known as Half-Demons by the more mundane Humans. Kaito have the ability to change into an animal form and to steal souls, at the cost of having a strong loving bond to the Kurori who sired them. They are considered the Kurori's slaves and are the working class of Erebus (next to Newborn Kurori).
There are actually three types of Kaito -Bestial, Halfling, and Craea. Although, in reality there are only two different types and two age classes. Craea are the first of these and splits off into two sub-types, newborn and newly created, both of which are about the same with small but serious differences.
Craea Kaito, whether just born as the result of a union between two Kaito or simply created by a powerful Kurori, they have the strongest love for their masters than at any other stage but also the most fragile. When a Human is turned into a Kaito, they usually black out and forget most of their past life (although there are some exceptions). When they first set eyes upon the Kurori that sired them, they will see them as beautiful and often having a radiance, presence of power, and nearly divine. Every word their master speaks is like beautiful music to their ears, and their touch is nearly enough for them to faint. Many Kaito look back upon this time in their life with fondness. However, at this time, the bond between the two is the most easily broken and the Kurori will often not care too much about the Kaito. It all depends on what the Kaito expects of their master; for example, if they think that their master loves them with all their heart, then it will deeply affect them when they see their master with someone else. Kaito at this stage can easily break into tears at even the slightest of harshness from their master. If they believe they've been wronged, it is not uncommon for a Kaito to run away and wish to forget their Kurori as if they were the Kaito's exboyfriend/exgirlfriend. The punishment for doing this is entirely reliant on the Kurori, who can even administer it from a distance. Craea Kaito have been reported running away and dropping dead before they could get so much as ten yards away, others black out and forget everything, and very rarely the Kurori will chase the Kaito and console them.
A Kaito is referred to as Bestial when they master their animal form and perfect the art of soul stealing. The moment this happens they leave the Craea stage and their relationship with their master will level out, effectively starting the bond (see below). This stage is what all Craea hope to achieve, though most Kaito reach it within a few months. Their animal form is their greatest tool, allowing the Kaito to quickly switch to it for stealth or for attack. Their form is not up to them, not even the Kurori can decide. Instead it is somewhat random, the animal chosen based on their personality. If you've ever heard of someone being attacked by an animal, it was probably a Kaito trying to steal their soul. For instance, the story of Dracula was actually based off of a powerful Kaito who could turn into a bat. As for the exact process of soul stealing... the Kaito need only kill someone, and their soul will essentially dwell within them. After that the Kaito can go to their Kurori master (or any Kurori for that matter) and they can draw the soul out from them, which takes the form of a glowing crystal, the exact size, color, and shape dependent on the victim.
The final type of final are known as Halflings, it's something of a mutation and a Bestial or Craea can bear the traits of one. They are quite literally "insert animal here"boys/girls (catgirls, lizardboys, etc.), meaning that they take one or two traits from the animal form that carries over to their Human form. This can be quite devastating, as the animal part chosen can often be quite embarrassing. Not only that, but it's literally impossible for a Halfliing to blend in with Humans. It's from these Kaitos that we get the rumors of Werewolves and the like.
The bond is of particular interest. The Kaito feels intense love for their Kurori. Don't confuse this with lust or the relationship between a wife & husband, although that is similar. The relationship is more of respect and is like that of a Servant who would love to do nothing more than serve their Master, actually it's exactly like that. Kaito aren't supernaturally inclined to do whatever their Kurori ask, like they don't feel forced to. However, because they love their Kurori they will pretty much do anything to make them happy. This bond is not as strong on the Kurori's side, they will like their Kaito and will care for them, but nothing as intense as what the Kaito feels for them. The bond also transcends the emotional and mental to even affect the two physically. If the Kurori were to die then the Kaito would fall with them. If the Kaito were to die, then the Kurori would be stricken with grief for a time, depending on how attached they were to the Kaito.
Note: Some Kaito and Kurori will actually forge a relationship with this bond. This is not only taboo, but punishable by death on the Kaito's part.
When a Kurori feels grief for their fallen Kaito, the feeling is called "Haunt". The level of depression felt is dependent on how long the Kaito was cared for, and at what stage they were at. At worst the depression can cause the Kurori to fall ill and die. However, the usual case is a slight depression for a few months before getting over it completely, sometimes forgetting about the Kaito entirely. When a Kurori has owned and lost many Kaito, the haunt becomes less and less until it stops affecting them entirely, even the bond the Kurori feels with his new Kaito becomes lesser with each Kaito. Eventually a Kurori like this will feel nothing for their Kaito and will not care to lose them. The only Kurori recorded to have reached this state is one Ulrich Anselm, who was given the nickname "Loveless" for his coldness. The funny thing is that bonds made by Kurori like this are actually a lot stronger on the Kaito's side, until the point where their Kaitos are all over them
Melophane's New Humans
After the war between Humans and Kurori erupted, and after it had kept its course for a few months (nearly leading to the genocide of the human race). A Kurori stepped forward, by name of Melophane. His motives are unknown but it is believed that he took pity on the suffering humans. To help give the human race a fighting chance, he turned whoever was willing into what are now known as New Humans, humans with special abilities made to counter the Kurori invasions. They have proven to be so effective that most Kurori will not dare even set foot anywhere around Urecules. There are three documented types of New Humans, but other types have been reported as well. They all have a bond with Melophane, similar to the bond between Kaito and Kurori. If Melophane were to die, the rest of the New Humans would either die with him or lose their abilities. Because of this, Melophane is a prime target among Kurori supporters and so the New Humans guard him with their lives.
The first type are known as Seekers and they have often been called Melophane's students, though in reality they usually serve as his captains. In rank, they are just below Melophane, and they direct most of the Rebellion's movements. Their ability is simply an increase in mental capability. They are incredibly intelligent and are able to memorize and run hundreds of calculations at once, putting them on par with computers. They are strategists that can create incredibly well thought out plans with low chances of failure. It's not unheard of for a Seeker to be able to clear their mind and use all manners of psychic powers, whether it be to see into the future or the more standard telekinesis. With these abilities they can pretty much replicate the Kurori, in terms of being able to do anything. However, the ability comes at a price, which takes the form of stress. With a minor use of their power, they will receive a headache which gets progressively worse with each use. With a major use or a lot of minor uses the headache will be splitting. At this point the Seeker feels as if their head is being torn apart and more often than not they can only manage to sit and cry about the amount of pain they're in, not able to do much else. It's possible to continue past this point but if they do their brain will essentially shut down to cope with the stress, leaving them a human vegetable for a time. They are definitely the most fragile of the New Humans, but can also be the most powerful.
The second known type of the four are called Warriors. These are humans that have been blessed with enhanced physical abilities. Enhanced Strength, Speed, Senses, and Endurance. They are considered the regular soldier of Melophane's Rebellion. The uniqueness of their ability is that they're essentially as strong, fast, etc. as they believe they are, their body will adapt accordingly. So if a person believes they are faster than a cheetah, then they will be. It's a hard concept to achieve and even harder to master completely. So many Warriors are actually no better than an Olympic Athlete. Unlike the other types of New Humans, they have no real price for the use of their abilities... However, Warriors will suffer a bit from increased needs/desires/drive (everything is enhanced, remember?). If a Warrior, for example, smoked back when they were a Human, they will now be smoking twice as much. Others will have increased appetites, increased bloodlust, increased need to sleep, and many suffer from addictions.
The third of the four types are called Keepers. Their function is simply to disable other functions. They can steal energy, shut down organs, and even paralyze someone. In terms of rank among Melophane's Rebellion, they could be classified as the Special Forces. All they have to do is touch their opponent to begin draining them or shutting them down, however they have to hold their grasp on them for the ability to work. So if a Keeper wishes to paralyze someone, they have to hold onto them for the entirety of it. The price of the Keeper is tiredness, becoming very tired after even a minute of using their ability. Recovering their perkiness after a few minutes of not using their power.
The fourth, final type are the most mysterious of them all, not having any definite power or price. They are called "Controllers". The other type represents all the New Humans with strange abilities that do not fit into the other three. The power can be as simple as controlling fire or shadows but can be as complicated as controlling atoms. That being said, the usual ability is in fact to control something, which is why they're called Controllers. They are the rarest of the three types, but can often be more powerful than the other three. However, they are often be the most unstable.
Each type of New Human has its drawbacks and others have limited functionality. For this reason, when in combat, New Humans will always work in teams. A Seeker will stand back and direct the battle. Warriors andControllers aren't powerful enough to match a Kurori, so they instead attempt diversions. The diversions are so a Keeper New Human can sneak up on the Kurori and paralyze them from behind so that one of the others can run in and finish them off. Their group tactics are extremely effective and many Kurori can't hope to hold off a seasoned team of New Humans. It takes a large number of New Humans to attempt to take down multiple Kurori, a situation which often results in failure.
